We seek to estimate the prestige value of winning beyond monetary prizes in Cutthroat Kitchen, a cooking show in which dishes are judged in a series of elimination rounds, with the twist that action is periodically paused to auction sabotages against rivals. We estimate the distribution of contestants’ prestige values using a structural model of bidding by a contestant with rational expectations about sabotage effectiveness taken from the data. Our most conservative specification—allowing for risk aversion and bias in the beliefs about sabotage effectiveness—yields mean prestige values of nearly $10,000 for typical episodes and over $35,000 for tournaments.

我々は、カットスロート・キッチンにおける賞金獲得を超えたプレステージの価値の推計を試みた。カットスロート・キッチンは料理番組で、料理は一連の予選で判定されるが、調理がライバルに対する妨害行為のオークションのために定期的に小休止するという捻りが加えられている。我々は、参加者のプレステージ価値の分布を、データから得た妨害行為の効果についての合理的予想を織り込んだ参加者の入札の構造モデルを用いて推計した。妨害行為の効果についての考えにリスク回避とバイアスを許容した我々の最も保守的な推計仕様では、通常のエピソードでは1万ドル近く、トーナメントでは3万5千ドル以上の平均的なプレステージ価値が得られた。
カットスロート・キッチンとは日本ではあまり聞かない番組だが、Cutthroat Kitchen - Wikipediaによると2013年から2017年までフード・ネットワークで放送されていたもののようで、時折り特別番組的なトーナメントが開催されていたらしい。こちらの日本語記事では、番組内容が以下のように紹介されている。
4人のシェフが生き残りをかけて3ラウンドまで戦う料理バトル。1ラウンド毎にひとりの敗者が決定。第1ラウンドでは4人それぞれのシェフに$25,000が手渡され、そのお金で各ラウンドで指定された料理を作るために必要な材料を制限時間60秒間で購入。料理対決の前にオークションが行われ、対戦者を妨害するために体の自由をなくすロープや、材料の追加、または材料の削減などの落札がOK。優勝者は残高をお持ち帰りすることができる。
料理対決番組と言えば日本では料理の鉄人が思い浮かぶが、実際、こちらの記事では、「Iron Chef became the base model for most future reality cooking competitions. Shows like Top Chef, Chopped, and Cutthroat Kitchen all owe a debt to Iron Chef for introducing the notion that watching chefs compete against one another could not only be entertaining, but brutal. 」「Cooking networks have tried to imitate the success of Iron Chef by first introducing a domestic spin-off, Iron Chef America, before producing a few homegrown originals. Cutthroat Kitchen introduces a capitalist twist by allowing chefs to purchase contest rule modifiers like the barring of opponents from using certain ingredients. 」と料理の鉄人が源流にあることを認めている。
