フリードマン「然るべき人を選出しさえすれば良いわけではない」

Townhall.comのミルトン・フリードマン生誕103年を記念した20の箴言集記事から、マンキューが以下を引用している。

I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.

我々の問題の解決策が単に正しい人を選ぶことだとは思わない。重要なことは、正しくない人も正しいことをすることが政治的に利益となるような世論の政治状況を確立することだ。正しくない人にとって正しいことをすることが政治的な利益とならない限り、正しい人も正しいことをしないだろう。さもなくば、正しいことを試みた途端に、その座を追われることになるからだ。
